Today I wake up some what early to get a lot of stuff done.
I go out and have a good look at the bike. Besides the missing catalytic converter and the muffler the only other damage I can see is a dent in the sidecar fender. I have a look at the front end and it looks straight and even but I think a see a small bend on the front brake rotor. I can ride with the brakes as they are so nothing I can do there.
I then go about putting the left muffler back on. Without the cat it pushes it way forward but everything bolts up nice and secure.
I go back in to the room and grab the phone book to look up the names I was given for the two shops. The first one i call is Trail Side Sports. The man on the phone tells me they have more licenced mechanics then anyone else nearby. I phone the other shop but there is no answer. So Trail Side in Espanola will be my first stop.
So I pack up the bike and try to start it. Since I don't have a working clutch and I can't disengage it I start it in gear. Not the best but I do get it running and start circling the parking lot until I find the perfect time to get out on the road. Now everyone I asked said that there are no stop lights in Little Current, which technically there are not except for the stop light to get on the one lane bridge to get off the island.
Shit.
So riding up to the bridge the light is red. I try to go a slow as possible without stalling but I reach to stop line and shift in to neutral. I have the tank mount reverse/ 2 wheel drive levers and this makes putting it in to neutral very easy. So the light turns green, I wait until al vehicles go past me and pop it in to first.
Except it doesn't want to go in to first. I keep pressing down but no first.
Shit.
Shut the bike off and I jump off to get a closer look. The toe part of the shifter is hitting the muffler. Because I lost the cat and had to put the muffler on with out it the muffler is now wider where it wasn't before and the shifter now hits it and won't engage first.
Shit.
O.K. I know what I have to do. I have to bend it out a bit so it will pass the muffler. I don't really want to pull the tools out to remove it and bend it as I am still in a lane waiting for the bridge. Fortunately I am in the last lane and traffic is very light so I just grab one of my ratchet straps and connect it to the shifter and ratchet it until the shifter bends enough to miss the muffler. Put the strap back and since I have to start the bike I push it up hill about 30 metres and wait for the light to change.
The light changes to green, most of the traffic passes and I start pushing the rig downhill. It is rolling a bit now, I jump on, hit the starter and it fires up, and off I go. The last vehicle passes me and I make it over the bridge.
The ride was nice and the scenery fantastic, I wish the Gopro was working. I start coming in to Espanola and there is some construction at the bottom of the hill. As luck would have it the road to the shop was before the construction and I ride in to the shop.
I walk in and tell the shop the problem. They tell me they will try but as they don't work on Urals they might not be able to do anything. This I fully understand. I roll the bike to the shop entrance and head down to the mall for breakfast. When I get back they are trying to figure out the problem. They pull the clutch actuator rod and it it fine. So the problem lies in the clutch itself. They do not have the proper Ural tools so back together go the parts and now I have to make it within 200 kilometres of my Ural dealer to get it fixed (I get 200 kilometres free with CAA).
I thank them for their time and effort, pay my bill, pour some fuel in to the tank and get ready to roll.
Literally.
The shop is on a hill so I start rolling down, pick up some speed and hit the starter. Fires right up and off I go.
I follow a side street as it will have less traffic and lights. It does a few stop signs but I can do rolling stops and time everything so I get through the intersections with no problems.
The problem occurs when that side street ends and I have to get on the main street. First intersection is fine, second intersection with a stop light is fine and then the next stop light.
A red light. I can't chug along so I have to stop and stall the bike. The light turns green and I try a running start but no luck. I see the road continues on a downward slope so I keep pushing the bike through the intersection and towards the hill until I can get it rolling and once it gets rolling I hit the starter and off I go.
So from here my plan is to get to Parry Sound and visit a friend. The ride for the most part was uneventful. I did have to slow down twice for construction but timed everything perfectly and drove on through. The only time I did stop was south of Sudbury for fuel. I kept riding until I found a spot with a good downhill portion. Filled my tank, started rolling down the hill, hit the starter and off I went. Much easier starting on a downhill with no clutch.
So now I'm getting closer to Parry Sound and I have to find a place for the night. I come along an exit and it has multiple signs for motels and I pull off the highway. More effin' stop lights. Make it through them and I see one place on the right. I don't choose it as I can't see an easy entrance but just after it is a Comfort Inn with an entrance I don't have to stop at.
In I go, and luckily for me I get the last room available. The front desk tells me that the first place I saw was fully booked so I'm glad I gave it a pass.
I get my room, make a few trips unloading the bike then head downtown for food and beers.
